The South's Second Snow Storm

Almost 2 weeks to the day Atlanta was hit with another winter storm on Feb 12, 2014. In order to avoid a similar catastrophe to the previous storm my work (and all schools) closed the clinic 2 days in advanced for what ended up to be a rainy afternoon.  However, the next day the sleet and ice began to fall with 1/4" to 1/2" of ice covering all surfaces by the end of the day.

I broke out my shoe covers and went treking in the ice for a little outdoor time on my day off work

Luckily, Heath didn't have to spend the night overnight at work so we cozied up in the house together and watched as the ice covered town began to get covered up in snow around midnight that evening.  Heath had to be up quite early the next morning for work so when he noticed just how much snow had fallen over the evening he told me to get up with the sun.  I was so glad I did because the view outside our home was absolutely breathtaking!!  I ventured out into the woods behind our home (while cautiously watching for limbs breaking under the weight of ice-heavy, wet snow combo).  I began capturing pictures that just can't do the beauty justice but here you go...

Our home is the one all the way to the right

I literally felt so much joy in my body exploring in the snow covered trails behind our home.  Our house and yard looked so stunning covered in white.  It made me yearn for transplanting my Georgia home to my home state where it could be like this yearly.  I was so disappointed that Heath wasn't there to take it all in with me.

The sun was warming things up quickly so I grabbed my cross-country skis and ventured out around our neighborhood and over to the local park.

By the time I skied through the park and got back to the road I had traveled over on, I realized that there was not enough snow left on the road to allow me to ski home.  I was able to ski part-way back to the house on a wooded mountain bike trail that weaved back to our house.

But as you can see, the conditions were getting quite soggy and I was literally soaking wet from snow slopping off the trees onto my coat and hat.  I had to give up, pop the skis off and hike the remaining several hundred yards home.

The temperatures had risen into the mid-40s by 10am and by 4pm this was all that was left of the snow at our home.

It was so beautiful while it lasted and luckily we were all well prepared (safely at our homes) this time around.  Unlike, my family up in Wisconsin (and Minnesota and Illinois) that have been buried in SNOW and holded up from BITTER COLD temps for way too many months, our winter snow here in the South only lasted a few short hours as spring began to bloom within days.
